Abstract

The specifications for fleets to reduce the weight of vehicles are as varied as the operations they represents. The obvious reason for cutting vehicles weight is to increase payload capacity. The decision, though, incorporates a number of tradeoffs - a host of other factors that must be weighed in order to make a truly cost-effective choice. But the best approach for any fleet that is considering lightweight specs is to sit down with the vehicle manufacturers and work it out. Simulation software programs are available from most tractor, trailer and component suppliers that can calculate many of the factors, including cost and resale value. Computer also allow for scientific evaluation of loading practices so fleets can optimize weight carrying capacity in trailers as well.
