Abstract
The present paper offers a theoretical literature review of Goffman's concept of stigma, which has been extensively relied upon in discursive and educational studies in Brazil, by highlighting its relation to H. Becker's Sociology of Deviance and its roots in the Chicago School. The paper aims at approaching such sociological notions from a discursive and interactional standpoint. It is specifically argued that certain analytical categories drawn from work in both interactional sociolinguistics and narrative analysis can be productively employed to provide a better understanding of the notions of deviance and stigma.
