Helena Ostrowska née Morsztyn (1815-1888) - Educational Activist and Philanthropist of Maluszyn

Abstract

Helena Ostrowska née Morsztyn was born on 5 November 1815 in Warsaw, in a house at 1768 Świȩtojerska Street, to Count Ludwig Morsztyn (1782-1865) (Leliwa coat of arms) and Countess Maria Ostrowska (Rawicz coat of arms). Helena's character and personality were shaped by the atmosphere of her family home, parental care-giving, and a thorough education rooted in patriotic traditions. Her father's dedication to managing the estate in Ptawowice prepared the young heiress for her future responsibilities as a mother and homemaker. As a result, Helena's marriage to Aleksander Ostrowski (Korab coat of arms), the young heir of Maluszyn estate, proved to be a success. Helena and Aleksand-er Ostrowski not only made great efforts to educate their children, but also took considerable interest in public education and the creation of elementary schools. The heiress of Maluszyn estate became an ardent supporter of free education for rural children. Her daughter Ludwika and her niece Teresa Siemieńska née Skórkowska continued Helena's work in the local branch of the Association of the Wives of the Landed Gentry, co-founded by the owner of Maluszyn estate and local noblewomen, under Teresa Siemieńska's leadership.
