Shifting Costs in the journal publishing world

Abstract

The panel discussed the production of academic journals and the cost centers associated with their publication. Nawin Gupta, a publishing consultant associated with an academic press, reviewed the journal publishing process by describing drivers of change in publishing over the past twenty-five years and new costs that have emerged as a result. The second speaker, Barry Davis, a specialist in journal printing and publishing services, compared processes used in 1983 to the ones needed for 2008 to illustrate the integration of print journal manufacturing and online journal preparation. The third panelist, Chris Beckett, a provider of hosting services for publishers, explained the processes required to deliver materials online and the complexities of providing the functionality demanded by publishers and journal users. Evolving forms of communication and collaboration in research promise to drive changes in scholarly journal publishing including new cost centers. © The North American Serials Interest Group, Inc.
