Abstract

An electroencephalogram, abbreviated EEG, is a visible record of the amplified electrical activity generated by the nerve cells of the brain. By placing electrodes on the scalp and amplifying the electrical activity that they pick up, an 'electrical brain picture' can be recorded through the skull and made to appear in written form, seen as rising and falling electrical potentials called brain waves. A well-recorded EEG can provide the neurologist with a continuous record of functional changes in activity in many areas of the living, reacting brain. This information can be correlated with the neurological examination and other special examination procedures (e. g. , X-ray, CT scan). The synthesis of these data is necessary for the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of patients who are suspected of having a wide range of neurological problems: seizures; brain tumors; cerebrovascular, metabolic, or toxic disorders; infectious or degenerative diseases of the brain.
