Abstract

Silver nanoparticle preparation and X-ray diffraction studies are reported in this paper. Metallic nanoparticles are traditionally synthesized by wet chemical techniques, where the chemicals used are quite often toxic and flammable. This paper deals with a cost effective and environment friendly technique for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles from silver nitrate solution by co-precipitation using the leaf extract of different species of Ocimum which acts as reducing and capping agent. The important ingredients responsible for the formation of silver nanoparticles present in the leaf extract are triterpenes, flavonoids and eugenol. Wide range of experimental conditions has been adopted in this process and its X-ray diffraction characterizations have been studied. The average crystalline size was 12 nm. The particle size and strain which were calculated using Williamson-Hall equation were 12.3 and 0.3688 respectively. The dislocation density was 7.9 × 1014 m−2.
