The effects and clinical implementations of Tai Chi exercise

Abstract

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese mind-body exercise consisting of a series of slow and controlled movements. Tai Chi appears to be safe and effective in promoting aerobic capacity, muscle strength, and flexibility and also appears to have psychological benefits. There has been an increasing number of studies in recent years relating Tai Chi to fields of cardiac and geriatric rehabilitation. Tai Chi, by improving cardiorespiratory function, muscle strength, and postural control among older people, is believed to be one of the most promising exercises that older people can practice to reduce falls and related complications. Better adherence to the exercise programs is another aspect in favor of Tai Chi exercise, which takes place in evidence-based treatment recommendations of knee osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. The aim of the present review is to summarize the current literature about the effects of practicing Tai Chi and its uses in various fields, such as cardiac rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, and rheumatological diseases.
