Abstract
In the information on the occurrence of tumours in mice, either spontaneously or following exposure to carcinogens, renal neoplasms do not rank among those most commonly discussed; it has been stated that renal neoplasms in this species are 'extremely rare' (Dunn, 1967). It could be argued whether this is really so or is simply a consequence of the fact that animals developing tumours at other sites or have been considered more suitable for the study of fundamental aspects of neoplasia. In fact, at least one mouse strain (BALB/cf/Cd) with a high incidence of spontaneous renal adenomas is now available (Committee on Standardized Genetic Nomenclature for Mice, 1968). In addition, several reports on the induction of renal tumours in the mouse have been published.
