Pulmonary hemorrhage is recognized when large amounts of blood appear in the airway, usually associated with a sudden deterioration in the infant’s clinical condition. Sometimes referred to as massive pulmonary hemorrhage, it should be distinguished from the relatively common occurrence of minor blood staining of respiratory secretions, occurring in ventilated infants secondary to trauma resulting from intubation or airway suction.
