New educational materials about atopic dermatitis for primary care: pharmacy staff's and patients' perspectives

Abstract

Aim: Although effective therapies for atopic dermatitis (AD) are available, many patients remain inadequately managed, often due to limited understanding of the condition and its treatment. Therefore, new educational materials were developed aimed at improving patient counselling for AD. The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of community pharmacy staff and patients regarding the new educational materials (an e-learning module for healthcare providers and a patient information booklet). Subject and methods: Eleven Dutch community pharmacies participated in this mixed-methods study. Pharmacy staff completed an e-learning module and a survey about the e-learning. Patients with AD visiting a pharmacy received the information booklet and counselling. Afterwards, these patients were invited to complete a survey. Also, one pharmacy technician per pharmacy was interviewed about their experiences with the booklets and the e-learning. The interview guide was developed using the Theoretical Domains Framework and the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation–Behavior model. Surveys were analysed descriptively; verbatim transcripts were analysed deductively and inductively. Results: Thirteen pharmacy staff members completed the survey. They found the e-learning valuable. Additionally, eight pharmacy technicians were interviewed and found the booklet useful but comprehensive. Through all participating pharmacies, 188 patients were invited for participation. Of these, 39 patients completed the survey. Over half of these patients gained knowledge about AD and its treatment thanks to the booklet. Additionally, many patients felt adequately assisted by the technician and found them knowledgeable. Conclusion: Pharmacy staff and patients believe the new information materials improve first-line care for AD.
