Abstract

Several reports suggest that nifedipine is beneficial in the treatment of primary pulmonary hypertension and hypoxic pulmonary hypertension. A recent editorial noted that treatment of pulmonary hypertension with calcium channel blockers is under investigation and appears promising. However, a current abstract reports variable hemodynamic responses and frequent side effects with the use of nifedipine in primary pulmonary hypertension. Because of a recent adverse experience with this drug, we urge that nifedipine be used cautiously to treat severe pulmonary hypertension.
