Abstract
Introduction. The use of social media in Peru increased considerably from the social confinement due to Covid-19 and brought with it a risk of addiction to them. The problem of social media addiction and academic procrastination is today mainly affecting university students. Objective. To analyze the relationship between social media addiction and academic procrastination of a group of Lima university students. Method. Quantitative and cross-sectional study that surveyed a total of 223 university students. Two instruments were used to assess social media addiction and two instruments to assess academic procrastination. Results. The results showed a positive and moderate relationship between the levels of social media addiction and academic procrastination (r= .49; p<0.010) and a multiple regression model showed that social media addiction had a significant effect on academic procrastination explaining 26.4% of its variance. Conclusions. The levels of social media addiction and procrastination of the Lima university students in the study show a clear positive relationship. In addition, social media addiction has a significant effect on academic procrastination considering sex, hours of social media use and hours of study as control variables.
