Abstract
Pluripotent epiblast is formed during preimplantation development. Hashimoto and Sasaki show that TEAD-YAP is activated and induces pluripotency factors in the forming epiblast cells. TEAD activity and pluripotency factor expression are highly variable, and cell competition eliminates unspecified cells to ensure the production of a high-quality epiblast.
