Abstract

Stingrays (family Dasyatidae) are among the least-studied fish species in Indonesian waters, yet they play an important ecological role in freshwater and marine ecosystems. This review compiles data on the current status, taxonomy, distribution, and threats to stingray populations in Indonesia, with emphasis on species such as Urogymnus polylepis (Giant Freshwater Stingray), which is known to inhabit large river systems like the Mahakam and Kapuas. Habitat degradation, overfishing, and lack of conservation measures are major threats to these species. The paper highlights the urgent need for further research and conservation strategies to protect stingrays in Indonesian waters.
