Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of verbal ability and numerical ability on students' mathematics learning achievement, either partially or simultaneously. This research is ex post facto. with a population of 144 students of class VII SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar and a sample of 57 students taken through proportional stratified random sampling technique. Data collection techniques used verbal ability test instruments and numerical ability tests which were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using multiple linear regression analysis. The results of descriptive statistical analysis showed that students' verbal abilities were in the medium category, students' numerical abilities were in the medium category, and students' learning achievements were in the high category. The results of inferential statistical analysis show that: (1) verbal ability and numerical ability have a positive effect together on achievement learning mathematics (Y) students of class VII SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar. With a significance value of 0.016 < 0.05, or í µí°¹ í µí±í µí±œí µí±¢í µí±›í µí±¡ > í µí°¹ í µí±¡í µí±Ží µí±í µí±™í µí±’ (4.468 > 3.16), the coefficient of determination is 14.2%, (2) there is no effect of verbal ability on students' mathematics learning achievement, with a significant value of 0.84 > 0.05, or í µí±¡ í µí±í µí±œí µí±¢í µí±›í µí±¡ < í µí±¡ í µí±¡í µí±Ží µí±í µí±™í µí±’ (0.19 < 2.00), and (3) numerical ability has a positive effect on students' learning achievement in mathematics, with a significant value of 0.004 < 0.05, or í µí±¡ í µí±í µí±œí µí±¢í µí±›í µí±¡ > í µí±¡ í µí±¡í µí±Ží µí±í µí±™í µí±’ (2.98 > 2.00).
