Abstract
Data interchange between computer aided design (CAD) systems is predominantly carried via a version of the neutral file format known as the initial graphics exchange specification (IGES). Although commonly available, there are many kinds of IGES, and consequent inconsistencies in the interface can be the cause of problem when integrating systems from different manufacturers. The STandard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP) is a standard used for product data representation and exchange, set out to resolve the failures of IGES. This standard is developed to replace IGES. The key difference between STEP and previous data interchange standards is the separation of data models from implementation forms.
