Abstract

Disposal of hatchery waste is a continuing problem to the hatchery industry. Extruding a mixture of ground corn/hatchery waste (75/25) shows that extrusion can reduce the moisture of hatchery waste so that it can be handled and stored as a feed ingredient. Most, if not all, organisms were destroyed by the high temperature in the extruder with this process. A high moisture waste material (60% moisture) was reduced to 10 to 11% moisture. Extrusion is an energy intensive process that may offer hatcheries an alternative to current disposal methods. Application depends on economic processing costs with some potential return.
