Abstract
The feasibility of using bioartificial pancreas (BAP) during diabetic pregnancy was evaluated. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic female mice (ICR) received transplants of rat islets encapsulated within alginate microbeads. The mice were bred and the pups were delivered by caesarian section on the 19th day of gestation. Outcome parameters from transplanted animals were compared to nondiabetic control animals and to untreated diabetic animals.
