Evidence that the area postrema mediates the central cardiovascular response to angiotensin II

Abstract

ANGIOTENSIN can affect the cardiovascular system in several different ways. Its direct vasoconstrictor action is well recognized but it can also exert cardiovascular effects by stimulating the autonomic nervous system at a variety of sites including the adrenal medulla1, the sympathetic ganglia 2, the post-ganglionic sympathetic nerve terminals3 and the brain4. It has not been possible, so far, to quantitate the relative importance of these various effects of the hormone in either physiological or pathological circumstances. © 1970 Nature Publishing Group.
