Abstract
The present paper discusses some of the findings on the teaching of democracy and the daily school dimension of citizenship education in Mexico. I focused mainly on the functioning and praxis of said teaching in two basic elementary education institutions with an alternative and democratizing program (as described by the institutions themselves). The main goal of the present analysis is to describe and better understand the cultural, theoretical and practical particularities in the teaching of democracy. To do this, we used a qualitative methodology based on case studies with an ethnographic approach, through observations and records in the classroom, as well as semi-structured interviews with teachers and school principals. The results show that the teaching of democracy constitutes a crucial axis in the curricular exercise of both schools and that, far from being exhausted in the formal curriculum, it translates into alternative proposals and principles that are lived and recreated day by day.
