Abstract

The 16S rRNA sequence of an unknown leuconostoc originally isolated from sauerkraut was investigated by reverse transcription. A comparison of the sequence with those from other lactic acid bacteria revealed the unknown organism represents a new albeit peripheral line within the genus Leuconostoc sensu stricto. A new species, Leuconostoc fallax, is proposed for this organism. The type strain is DSM 20189. © 1991.
