Abstract
The terms international and internationalisation are frequently used in association with the university today, for example, in the UK it is important for universities to have an international reputation in order to survive in the golbal world. In this paper I argue that the dominant notion of internationalisation is underpinned by an economic imperative and that this is impoverished; the economic imperative dominates all sectors of education. What is necessary, I suggest, is a cultural internationalisation that would enrich the educational experience and challenge the dominance of an economically driven understanding of internationalisation. © 2008 by Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Navarra.
