Abstract

The expansion of the ideal of religious tolerance in 18th century Europe was not the exclusive work of deists or atheists. Many Christians then argued that intolerance was contrary to the Gospel and the spirit of the early centuries of the Church. The censorship of the Inquisition and the absence of religious minorities prevented the discussions on tolerance taking place in countries such as France or Austria from occurring south of the Pyrenees. Even so, Christian arguments in favour of religious freedom appeared, albeit stealthily, in 18th century Spain and were reflected in the texts of some Spanish reformers.
