Abstract
When I was invited by the editors to contribute to this volume celebrating the work of Richard Hodges I was keen to do so as a long-time friend and admirer of his work. As a prehistorian currently digging up Neanderthals in Iraqi Kurdistan, though, I was slightly stumped about what to write about, given that the focus of most of Richard’s work has been on, as the editors said in their invitation letter, ‘Europe and the Mediterranean in the central and later first millennium’ - AD of course! Thinking back to our time as junior lecturers at the University of Sheffield….
