Abstract

This study seeks to examine the current state of academic awareness of intersexuality in infant, primary and secondary education; besides the affective-sexual coeducation of Programa Forma Joven implemented in two secondary schools in Almería. We employed a qualitative methodology, specifically a Multiple Case Study. Observation, a documentary analysis and a semi-structured interview have been utilized as data gathering methods. In the data analysis we used the coding process for holistic and interrelated understanding, including a methodological triangulation for validity and reliability. The results show the following issues: the lack of research into intersexuality, generating an academic ignorance that hampers the development of measures, programs and laws to include the sexual diversity in our society; unchallenged and unquestioned practices and attitudes of teachers that discriminate against these pupils, hindering their acceptance, normalization and social inclusion; and the absence of intersexuality in curricula and educational materials, which leads to ignorance and prejudice against their participation.
