Abstract
Introduction: Based on statistical data published by National Statistics Institution Republic of Indonesia, there are 12.183 villages that still have people with undernutrition. East Java is one of the provinces listed to have the highest rate of people with undernutrition, as much as 1.418 villages and subdistricts. Surabaya is one of the areas in East Java that have a high prevalence of undernutrition in children. Based on a research conducted in Darmokali, Surabaya, it was found that 34,1% of children experience lack of nutrition and 2,3% are identified as having undernutrition. Cooking demo is one of health education formats that included cooking activities watched by respondents as the targets of the research. High protein food consumption is important for respondents with undernutrition as the effort to catch up growth and development as well as to compensate for the repeated infection. In order to increase the effectiveness of nutrition education media which were previously based on visual communication, cooking demo continued by eating it together can be an alternative to increase nutrition intervention in order to increase weight in toddlers. Objective: Discover the association between cooking demo and eating high protein menu together with weight improvement for children in Simokerto Sub District. Method: Conducting cooking demo and eating together for as long as 12 days which was facilitated by cadres and nutrition students. There are three menus which are being served for 12 days and 3 days menu cycle. Foods given to the toddlers are food with high protein content, covering more than 20% of daily protein requirements for toddlers for 100 grams of the food. Menus were determined through nutrition content analysis using Indonesia Food Composition Table (TKPI) which was suited by the availability of the food and food price around the respondents. Weighing process conducted using digital weight scale before and after the intervention. Result: Weight gain is accomplished with average weight gain as much as 233,8 grams after 12 days of intervention. There are some of the toddlers who didn’t experience weight gain due to special conditions, such as repeated infection and absence in the cooking demo. Conclusion: Cooking demo is one of nutrition education formats that can be applied to increase weight in toddlers and proven to be effective in increasing weight in toddlers. High protein menu is effective on increasing a toddler's weight if being given consistently for as long as 12 days of intervention which will increase toddlers weight as much as 233,8 grams.
