Molecular iodine enhancing sulfadiazine photodegradation in water under UVA irradiation

Abstract

Photodegradation of sulfadiazine (SD), a typical sulfonamide antibiotic (SA) frequently detected in the aquatic environment, under UVA irradiation enhanced by molecular iodine was investigated. Herein, molecular iodine I2 and coexisting I3- were provided by hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide in acidic solution. During the treatment, highly reactive iodine radicals (I•, I2-), produced by UVA photolytic activation of both I2 and I3-, were verified as the dominated oxidant species against the decomposition of SD in aqueous solution. Besides, SD removal was found to be affected by the initial pH value, KI and H2O2 added concentrations.
