Abstract
This study aims to analyze the leadership styles of school principals and their impact on teachers’ motivation and performance in Cluster 2 of Sei Balai District. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The informants consisted of 30 teachers selected purposively based on their involvement in school activities and their interaction with the school principal. The findings reveal that most principals in the cluster adopt transformational and democratic leadership styles, characterized by open communication, teacher involvement in decision-making, and support for teaching innovation. These leadership styles positively influence teacher motivation, as evidenced by increased enthusiasm, a sense of belonging, and proactive behavior in carrying out professional duties. Furthermore, teacher performance improved in terms of lesson planning, implementation, and evaluation. However, in some schools, authoritarian leadership styles were still present, resulting in stagnant motivation and performance levels. This study supports previous research indicating that effective leadership is not solely determined by outcomes but also by the quality of interpersonal relationships fostered by the principal. The findings highlight the need for leadership training programs that emphasize humanistic approaches to improve the quality of education at the elementary school level.
