Abstract

Forty patients with acne aestivalis, a new skin disorder, are presented. Thirty seven out of 40 of the patients were women, nearly all aged 20 to 40 years. Only two patients had histories of acne vulgaris. The eruption starts in spring or summer. The primary lesions are hard, domeshaped, pale or red papules localized to the face, neck, chest and shoulders. Pustules and comedones are rare. The eruption is usually itchy. Histologically, there is cystic dilatation of the hair follicle with hyperkeratosis caused by stenosis of the orifice of the follicle. The corresponding sebaceous gland is atrophic, and there is a slight perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate. The eruption persists for 3 to 6 months and disappears as light intensity decreases. The etiology is not clear. Massive exposure to sunlight is a main factor. The importance of sunscreens and other factors is discussed. (Journal received: 10th April, 1974)
