Abstract
Foams observed in iron oxide slag melts are essentially unstable, and the foaminess depends on the rate of foaming by gas injection and decay rate of the foams. The foaminess and foam life increase rapidly by decreasing O/Si ratios below 3. 5. The decrease of surface tension contributes to the increase of foam life. Foaminess and foam life with Ar plus 3%H//2 gas are higher than with Ar gas. Addition of P//2O//5, Na//2O or CaF//2 to the FeO-CaO-SiO//2 slags contributes to increases in the foaminess and foam life.
