To address difficult design issues that emerge throughout the prototyping process, interaction designers must rapidly secure user feedback that is both cost-effective and informative during the early stages of the product's lifecycle. To do this, the authors devised a hybrid method of mobile experience prototyping referred to as "paper-in-screen." Ten interaction designers participated in a pilot evaluation study, including a demonstration using the "paper-in-screen" method, hands-on exercise, and a semi-structured interview on the potential and drawbacks of the approach. The study yielded nine themes of qualitative data from which a reflective analysis was performed. Findings suggest considerable support for the method, but also an important contribution to mobile prototyping methodology for interaction designers. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
