Abstract
There has been an increase in scientific publications on gender studies at a global level. Therefore, they have begun to be characterized as an interdisciplinary field. The present article offers a general overview of the field and how it is structured in Mexico, through the use of journals indexed in Web of Science and through bibliometric techniques. Results show it has great specificity, related to how it emerged. Gender studies are carried out within distinctly consolidated disciplines that do not interact with each other (not interdisciplinary). This causes fragmentation and the absence of scientific communities with common investigative agendas. This is not merely due to a lack of recognition of specificity in this field, but also to its lack of institutionalization, and it affects performance assessment for people exclusively devoted to gender studies.
