Abstract
Channel flow having nonuniform potential vorticity is discussed in terms of two traditional forms of solution, from which a general "branch condition" is derived. From this, the conditions of critical flow at the sill in a channel of constant width are deduced. An example in which the potential vorticity is a linear function of the streamfunction and the rotation rate is zero is discussed.
