Abstract

Introduction: In recent times, attention has been paid to the relationship between developmental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and sleep disorders. Previously, we had been focus on the problems of nocturnal sleep, such as insomnia and circadian rhythm disorder in ASD patients. Recently, we meet many developmental disorder patients who complaint hypersomnolence. Among patients who complain about EDS in our clinic, they diagnosed as central hypersomnia are decreased. While cases with coexistence of hypersomnia and developmental disorders, or developmental disorder alone are increased. Therefore, we investigated patients with the complaint of hypersomnolence, who were also suspected developmental disorders. Method(s): 47 patients who complained of EDS with suspicion of developmental disorders had been examined between Jan to Dec 2016. In order to diagnose hypersomnolence disorders, PSG and MSLT was performed. In addition, for diagnosis developmental disorders, WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale)-III, WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children) - IV, CAARS(Conners" Adult ADHD Rating Scales), AQ (The Autism-Spectrum Quotient) were performed. Result(s): In 47 examined cases, developmental disorders coexisted in 24 cases. Among them, 13 patients diagnosed as having coexistence of hypersomnia (5: narcolepsy, 8: IHS) and developmental disorders (10:ADHD,3: ASD). 11 patients diagnosed as developing disorders (6: ADHD, 5: ASD) without hypersomnolcence disorders. The other 23 cases without developmental disorders were diagnosed as 4 narcolepsy and 6 HIS, and 13 cases were not diagnosed as central hypersomnia. Conclusion(s): ADHD has a higher rate of central hypersomnia (10/16) compared with ASD and the rate of narcolepsy was also high (5/10). While patients in ASD was diagnosed as IHS (3/6), narcolepsy cases were not observed. In the future, in cases of suspected hypersomnia, taking into consideration with the coexistence of developmental disorders, it is necessary to pay attention such as systematic interview and psychological examination carefully.
