Abstract

This handbook was conceived and created as a practical companion book to the fourth edition of Substance abuse: A comprehensive textbook, published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins in 2005. This book aims to offer the field authoritative, clinically oriented information on the subject of substance use, abuse, and dependence, with emphasis on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The handbook includes 11 sections. The first addresses the etiologic factors that are determinants of abuse and dependence behavior. The second section covers all relevant substances of abuse; the third discusses important topics related to compulsive and addictive behaviors. The fourth section is dedicated to evaluation and diagnostic classifications, including laboratory procedures, and the fifth focuses on treatment modalities. Section VI reviews the management of associated medical conditions. The seventh section covers relevant issues pertaining to the life cycle; the eighth emphasizes special addictive issues among women. Section IX underlines key addictive areas among special groups and special treatment settings, and Section X reviews relevant models of prevention. The final section discusses important training and educational aspects within the addiction field. The author's hope is that all clinically relevant areas covered in these 11 sections will be of benefit for clinicians at large. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)(preface)
