Visual Learning of Music through the Artistic Image: Some Reflections and Proposals

Abstract

Although in many cases pictures of works of art with musical iconography have been used to illustrate musical concepts, either in text books or audiovisual carriers and computer storage media, it is important to reflect on its usefulness within the field of music teaching and its correct implementation in the learning-teaching processes. For that purpose, the use of the artistic picture in the educational sphere is analyzed in this paper, as well as the general contributions of its use in music teaching. Subsequently, a series of particular contributions of musical iconography are proposed, through certain methodological premises which are going to ensure its proper use. This way, it will be concluded that the artistic image which represents musical elements is postulated as an excellent tool for musical teaching and learning in the different levels and degrees of specialization of music education.
