Abstract

Child protection is a sustainable effort to free children from various forms of violence and discrimination. One form of violence against children that is currently widespread in East Halmahera is rape. Based on facts in the field, cases of violence show that every year the number of sexual violence cases increases. This research aims to 1) describe the role of the church in responding to cases of violence in Buli, East Halmahera, 2) to describe the factors causing cases of child violence in Buli, East Halmahera. 3) to find out efforts to respond to cases of sexual harassment violence in the perspective of the role of the church and the Buli indigenous community in East Halmahera. Qualitative research with descriptive methods. The research instruments used were interview guides and document studies. Data testing was carried out using data triangulation techniques. The data that has been obtained is analyzed based on the following steps: 1) data collection, 2) reduction, 3) data display, and 4) verification and conclusions. The research results show that the church's role in responding has been carried out through a pastoral counseling approach. There are several cases of sexual abuse of children that occurred in Buli, East Halmahera Regency. Based on data released through the media Tandaseru.com, there were 8 cases in 2023, while in 2022 there were 14 cases of sexual harassment. The main factor that occurs in sexual violence against children in Buli, East Halmahera is the psychological element of the person responsible for the violence. The efforts made through the role of the church are pastoral counseling of the Pastors as the Daily Worker Body of the Congregation and Traditional Leaders from the perspective of the Ngaku re Rasai, Budi and Bahasa and Polite and Respect approaches. The Church has a very strategic role in developing, directing and guiding its people towards the path of salvation from the various world problems it faces. Meanwhile, traditional leaders also have an important role in dealing with the issue of sexual violence, because it is the existence of traditional figures that is always attached to them. The conclusion is that the role of the church and culture from a traditional perspective has played its role but has not been optimal in responding to sexual violence that occurs.
