Abstract

As it did with one hand, artificial intelligence (AI) has risen vibrantly with the other hand to the frontlines of initiating alternative environments to facilitate environmental sustainability across four major sectors: energy, transportation, biodiversity and water management. Through systematic literature review on academic literature, industry reports and the case studies of the past decade, the study identifies major technological advances and the possibility of this pollutant reduction. Examples of such challenges include data quality, computaional demand, interdisciplinarity, ethics, and opportunities generated by AI to optimize resource utilization and boost environmentally friendly governance are presented. The authors use the study to demonstrate that AI can optimize resources and give better governance while also dealing with its environmental impact. The next step towards future research for overcoming barriers, developing policies, and proper contribution by AI in global sustainability goals.
