Abstract

Vertical electrical soundings (VES), well logs and borehole data were used to identify and characterize the aquifers in Bou Salem area (northwestern Tunisia). Apparent resistivity data obtained at each vertical electrical sounding for different AB spacings, were interpreted one-dimensionally. The well logs were enabled precise reconstruction of lithological columns of the already drilled boreholes to be done, and were consequently used for electrical data calibration. The analysis and interpretation of the results reveal that the Quaternary permeable alluvia are restricted to the proximal zones of Bouhertma and Kasseb wadis. This distribution is controlled by mechanisms of sedimentation in the flood plains and by reactivation of N–S normal faulting in the recent Quaternary. It emerges also that the Eocene and Cretaceous limestones corresponding to substratum of the Quaternary alluvia and characterized by high resistivities may constitute interesting aquifers.
