Abstract
The psychotherapy of addiction depends on culture and the conditions of society. Abstinence as well as moderate consumption of substances are legitimate goals of therapy. Interventions range from the training of concrete behavior to the establishment of therapeutic communities. Population-specific approaches consider important sociodemographic and clinical patient characteristics. Elements of psychotherapy come from various approaches, such as brief motivational interventions or broad spectrum therapy. Evidence-based psychotherapy plays an important role, although the empirical base is still small.
