Developmental dysplasia of HIP

Abstract

Developmental dysplasia of hip presents with a spectrum of disease. The natural history of it is poorly appreciated and for this reason, the exact role of various screening programmes and treatments is also poorly understood. Correspondingly, different nations have pursued differing strategies for treating infants with developmental dysplasia of hip. In this chapter, we review the terminology to be aware of, the risk factors and various presentations of hip dysplasia as well as the importance of clinical examination and the role of imaging studies. Screening is controversial and we rehearse the arguments for and against it. We also discuss the various treatments options available; these are dependent upon the age of presentation. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
