FlavianRomehasmostoftenbeenstudiedwithoutseriousattentiontoitsmostprolificextantauthor,TitusFlaviusJosephus.Josephus,inturn,hasusuallybeenstudiedforwhatheiswritingabout(mainly,eventsinJudaea)ratherthanforthecontextinwhichhewrote-FlavianRome.Forthefirsttime,thisbookbringsthesetwophenomenaintocriticalengagement,sothatJosephusmayilluminateFlavianRome,andFlavianRome,Josephus.WhowerehislikelyaudiencesorpatronsinRome?Howdidthecontextinwhichhewroteaffecthiswriting?Whatdohisnarrativessayorimplyaboutthatcontext?Toexploresuchawiderangeofissues,requiringdifferentkindsofspecialknowledge,thisbookbringstogetherscholarshipfromNorthAmerica,Europe,andIsrael.Allofthechapters,fromdifferentvantage-points,dealwiththecentralquestionsposedabove.TheresultisasetofstudiesthatworkscoherentlyfromJosephus'historicalsituationthroughtheinterpretationofhiswritingsincontext.Afullintroductoryessaysituateseachcontributioninthehistoryofscholarship,highlightingitssignificancefortheunderlyingproblems.ThisisthefirststudyofJosephus'Romancontextinsuchscopeanddetail.ReaderswillfinditavaluableresourceforbothJosephusandFlavianRome,aswellasareference-pointforthedevelopmentsthataresuretofollow.
