Abstract

Hydride redn. of the title epoxynaphthalenone (I) gave an epoxy alc. which was converted to a sulfate ester by treatment with pyridine/SO3. Hydride redn. of the sulfate ester gave (±)-geosmin (II). The C-1 epimer of II was also prepd. from I. [on SciFinder(R)]
