The condition of women in “La miseria humana” by José Antonio Osorio Lizarazo

Abstract

This article analyzes José Antonio Osorio Lizarazo's (1900-1964) aesthetic evaluation of the condition of women in his novelistic project, “La miseria humana”, focusing on how he addresses violence against women, the compositional decisions he employs to represent them, and his position-taking on the matter. Through the study of his novels and their contextualization within the frameworks of the era, the relationship between his novelistic work and the pursuit of social justice is explained, followed by a specific textual analysis of how the author denounces domestic violence and sexual violence against poor women in his works. This article reveals the importance of Osorio Lizarazo's novels in denouncing violence against women and his contribution to the reflection on social justice and gender equality in Colombian literature.
