Abstract

Abstrak Demineralized water is water free from dissolved mineral and also used in laboratories and raw materials for steam. Mineral content in water can cause crusts in industrial equipment such as boilers and heat exchangers, lowering yield and selectivity values in the reaction process. Combination of filtration and ion exchanger processes were studied to treat demineralized. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the amount of cartridge resin on electric conductivity (EC), pH and total dissolved solid (TDS). The flow rate was set at 50 ml/minute. The results showed that the number of 4 cartridges resin (2 anions and 2 cations), the removal efficiency of EC and TDS achieved at 89.09% and 90.91%, respectively. As for the number of 6 cartridges resin (3 anions and 3 cations), the removal efficiency of EC and TDS obtained at 95.45% and 96.36%, respectively. In addition, the effect of flow rate was also studied using 6 cartridges resin (3 anions and 3 cations). Demineralized water has met the quality standard with a value of 0 ppm TDS, EC 0 μS/cm and pH 7.5. This studies shown that the combination of filtration and ion exchange process could be used effectively to treat demineralized water with high quality standard.
