Consideraciones sobre la presencia del tatú carreta Priodontes maximus (Kerr, 1792) (Cingulata: Chlamyphoridae) en Uruguay

Abstract

Resumen El tatú carreta fue mencionado por primera vez para Uruguay en 1987 con base en referencias visuales de terceros. La Lista Roja de UICN indica, sin basarse en registros concretos, que la especie está potencialmente extinta en Uruguay. Por otro lado, en más de una oportunidad diversos medios de comuni-cación han difundido noticias de hallazgos de ejemplares de esta especie que resultaron basarse en material de otros países o que correspondían realmente a especímenes de Cabassous tatouay mal identificados. En la presente contribución se reporta la existencia de restos de cuero y uñas de un ejemplar encontrado en la pri-mera mitad del Siglo XX en Cerro Largo. La especie puede considerarse probablemente extinta en Uruguay, aunque es necesario realizar trabajo de campo para verificar su situación. The IUCN Red List indicates, without formal confirmation, that the species is potentially extinct in Uruguay. On the other hand, mass media have spread news about findings of this species more than once, which were actually based on material from other countries or represented misidentified specimens of Cabassous tatouay. In this note the presence of the species in the country is reported on the basis of a piece of skin with claws found in the first half of the XX Century in Cerro Largo. The remains show evidence of hunting. The species may be considered probably extinct in Uruguay, although fieldwork is necessary to verify its conservation status.
