The purpose of this chapter is to consider the merits of dimensional and subtype approaches to understanding obsessive-compulsive disorder, with particular attention to the most widely used or innovative approaches. We will consider the relative advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches, with the goal of identifying the most promising ways of conceptualizing and investigating OCD.
