An OHS Conundrum: the Interconnectivity Between Occupational and Emerging Risks

Abstract

The risk management process is constantly evolving and developing, with new technologies, techniques, and approaches, emerging all the time - since the beginning of the 21st century. The interconnectivity between occupational hazards and emerging risks in industry can be complex and multifaceted, as different types of risks can overlap and amplify each other. Occupational health and safety are fundamental in any work environment, reflecting the commitment of organizations to the well-being of their employees, in addition to their own economic and industrial success. Occupational hazards have generally been the central focus of occupational health and safety policies and practices. However, as the world of work evolves and new technologies, practices and business models emerge, emerging hazards have also become a growing concern. Thus, the objective of this work is to research and analyze the interconnectivity between traditional occupational risks and emerging risks in the work environment, aiming to identify similarities, differences and possible prevention and management strategies. Traditional occupational risks, although well understood, are dynamic and still pose significant challenges to the health and safety of workers. On the other hand, emerging risks present a series of additional and challenges due to their novelty and dynamism. Rapidly evolving technologies and working conditions require a proactive approach to identifying, assessing and managing these risks, ensuring the health and safety of employees in an ever-changing work environment. Employers, employees, regulators and other stakeholders must work together proactively and in an integrated manner.
