Abstract

Anaemia is common among people with diabetes. Seek treatable factors. Haematinics are frequently abnormal. Before using HbA1c to monitor glycaemia, check the full blood count and, where relevant, seek genetic conditions that may affect red cells. Repeat the full blood count at intervals, e.g. at annual review. Consider screening for vitamin B12 lack in those on metformin.
