`Ohio 8556' Processing Tomato

Abstract

Derived as an F6 selection from the progeny of 5 crosses, with the final cross being between Ohio 7814 and OHW969-1 (F3), this main season, determinate variety produces relatively upright vines (semiprostrate towards maturity) suitable for machine harvesting. Average mean yields in 1991 at Fremont, Ohio, were 55.3, 52.9 and 54.7 t/ha for Ohio 8556, Ohio 7983 and Ohio 8245, respectively; in a commercial trial at Tiffin, Ohio, with double-row cultivation and a dense plant population, average mean yields were 90.5, 85.1 and 85.3 t/ha, respectively. The fruit weighed on average 56 g. Ohio 8556 is resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici race 1 and Verticillium dahliae race 1. Field tolerance of Alternaria solani and Colletotrichum spp. is good. Resistance to radial and concentric fruit cracking is excellent and fruit can be stored on the vine for extended periods before harvest. Soluble solids content was somewhat lower than that of Ohio 7983 and slightly higher than that of Ohio 8245. Ohio 8556 is suitable for the production of peeled, coreless whole-canned tomatoes, juice and pureed products.
